Future of IT Industry: Focus will be on 3 Main Jobs

With the dot com explosion and the introduction of gadgets and technologies such as iPhones, iPads, data centers, cloud computing and social media, the process of how businesses harness data has seen a paradigm change. This new form of exchanging and accessing data, information and knowledge has sent the IT department into a remarkable transformation.

Over the next few years, IT services industry will have to begin the processes of evolution since the consumerization of IT will be taken over by cloud computing to provide powerful processes to manage infrastructure.

In the great depression of 2001, the IT industry was massively hit and it was major target for budget cuts with most big IT solution providers seeing the most jobs being laid out. IT professionals thought the storm would ride back in their favor but nothing of that sort really happened. In the current scenario, most IT firms are still in the shadow of their former existence, reduced in numbers of tech support. Some of the jobs that were the center of IT boom in 1999 have been hit and some have totally disappeared.

Venture managers or project managers (despite the poor state of the IT department) will remain as the significant member of conventional companies, since the task of project manager isn’t a part of the centralized IT departments. The task is spread out in numerous business houses and business departments. Project managers at IT solution provider companies, will in the future be the analysts with the motive to assist managers and company management to make technology decisions. In such scenario, we assume that the project manager will accumulate business requirements to stakeholders and will proactively look for new techniques that will assist in transforming business entities, small or big. A close look at the current IT departments suggests that the project managers are the contact point for the business with tech vendors and tech consultants.

• IT consultation

The current situation in IT departments at various business organizations shows that hiring an IT pro can get really expensive for a business because they can get the same work done at half the price with third party consultants availed for hire as individuals or teams at dedicated IT service companies. Most of the IT professionals and administrators are steadily falling out to form multi-national consultancies that offer consultancy to all types of business models.

• Developer and programmer

From where we see it, IT jobs will steadily move into developer and programming jobs. IT support may have started as deploying and managing hardware and software both, the new trend may have an increasing demand for web-based application and mobile based application, which are easy to use, helpful and self-sufficient and work well with the new age handhelds.

These changes will not overnight. In fact, if you don’t compare the ground situation by considering a gap of at least 2 to 3 years, it’s nearly impossible to spot the slow transformation.
