Cyber Security: How Singapore will Prevent Cyber Crimes?

Singapore is on the way to become one of the eminent global IT and business hubs in the world. Over the last three decades, many big international companies have built their headquarters and bases in the island.

Singapore has become the safe, thriving and efficient gateway to the Asian market, thanks to its strategic position, technologically sophisticated infrastructure, efficient workforce and business supportive environment. Business ecosystem in Singapore is being operated under a digitalized environment, resulting in high reliance on the availability and existence of systems and data.

Needless to say that, digitalization has made the work process, communication and data exchange more smooth and sophisticated. But it can’t be sidelined that it has created bigger threats to the information and data security; and ever increasing cyber-attacks is one of them.

With nearly two million data records were leaked, stolen or lost every day, Singapore needs to reinforce its data security system and strategies to battle the cybercrimes. It is encouraging to see that Singapore has been putting her efforts to tame these risks. Over the few years, it has created national bodies, joined associations and spread awareness about cyber security.

• Singapore Government has taken efficient steps to develop frameworks and infrastructure to pave the way for cyber-security industry. For example, it has introduced Smart Nation vision and digital economy, and the National Cyber Security Master plan 2018, a five-year plan that is dedicated to strengthen the nation’s cyber-security programmes including Critical Inforcomm Infrastructure.
• The nation has created Cyber Security Agency to handle the cyber security matters. It reports to the PMO. The agency is also integrated with a recommended Cyber security Bill to monitor the maintenance of National Cyber Security.
• Singapore has teamed up with the members of ASEAN with its first ASEAN Ministerial Conference on Cyber security. Further, it will support CyberGreen to spread awareness of the potential vulnerabilities and the cyber health status of a country.
• Singapore is expected to launch its S$10 million ASEAN Cyber Capacity Programme (ACCP) in April 2017 to enhance the cyber capacities across ASEAN Member nations.

In this way, the Government of Singapore is committed to keep the cyber-crimes at the bay to create a secure IT environment in the nation. These efforts have more chances to go successful if businesses adapt basic precautions to keep their data and information safe.
